About Harstine House

Welcome to Harstine House! Harstine House is a lovingly cared for and shared family vacation home on the remote Harstine Island in the South Puget Sound. Harstine House is less than 2 hours from Seattle and one hour from both Olympia and Tacoma.  Situated at the northernmost tip of Harstine Island in the private and secluded Hartstene Pointe community, Harstine House offers a cozy, family-friendly home base for respite, relaxation, and recreation. A hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts with a short walk to the beach, wooded trails, a heated pool, hot tub, marina, tennis courts, indoor billiards at the Clubhouse, and plenty of cabanas and fire pits along the water. And don’t miss a ride on the rope swing at the picturesque North beach!

This 2-bed, 1-bathroom, 880 sq ft house sits nestled among old cedar trees, where deer, foxes, raccoons, and birds all happily wander through the property—Listen for the owl that takes residence in the towering trees above! Harstine House has everything you need for a short weekend away, or a long term stay. The “family bedroom” has a queen sized bed with a full sized roll out trundle bed–perfect for a family or up to 4 guests to sleep comfortably. The “main bedroom” has a queen bed, perfect for up to 2 guests. The living room features a futon sofa bed that can accommodate up to 2 more guests. On site washer and dryer. Plenty of space for 6-8 guests in the Harstine House!

Harstine House is located on Squaxin Island/Coast Salish People’s land. We at Harstine House are committed to paying rent to these native people whose land was stolen from them by settlers. For each rental dollar, Harstine House will pay a rent of 5% and donate to the community of the Squaxin Island Tribe. Click here to read more about the Squaxin Island people.

As you stay at Harstine House, please note the local female artists of the Salish Sea we feature in the house. An informational sheet with all of these terrific artists and ways to support is provided at the house and here.

The Community

Hartstene Pointe Community has been an island retreat for families, retirees, and remote workers since the early 1970s. Throughout all the years, it has retained its small community charm with a campground/family camp feel. Kids and pedestrians have the right of way and dominate the wide streets throughout the community– cars take a pause and are moving at a 15mph max at all times. The community is very protective of its island charm and diverse ecological habitat. There are maintained forest areas between each property and no owner has beach rights. All beaches and hiking trails are open and accessible to all in the community.

The Island & Beyond

Harstine Island is a little known, remote island in the South Puget Sound. It was once part of the Coast Salish/Squaxin people’s land. Until 1969, the island was only accessible by a local ferry boat, but now there is a car bridge that connects the mainland to the island. Harstine Island is 18sq miles of pristine densely forested land, surrounded by calm and clear saltwater shores. It has 3 state parks, great roads for biking adventures, a weekly farmer’s market, and not a single commercial market or store on the island as there is no commercial zoning on the island.

Are you noticing the different spellings of Harstine? You will probably notice more when you come visit. Feel free to read about the history of the naming of the island and all of its names still used interchangeably by clicking here
